Root Canals

A root canal is a dental procedure performed to treat a tooth that has become infected or severely damaged. The procedure involves removing the infected or damaged pulp (soft tissue) from the inside of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the area, and then sealing it to prevent further infection. A tooth that has undergone a root canal can be saved and restored to function properly.

Here's an overview of the root canal procedure:

1. Diagnosis: Your dentist will examine your tooth, possibly using X-rays, to determine the extent of the infection or damage. Common signs that a root canal may be necessary include severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, swelling, and inflammation.
2. Anesthesia: Before starting the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and the surrounding area. This ensures that you won't feel any pain during the procedure.
3. Access Opening: A small opening is made in the crown (top) of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
4. Removal of Infected Tissue: The infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and the root canals using specialized instruments.
5. Cleaning and Shaping: The pulp chamber and root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to remove any remaining debris and bacteria. This step is crucial for preventing reinfection.
6. Filling and Sealing: After the canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The access opening is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
7. Restoration: In many cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal will require additional restoration to reinforce its structure. This may involve placing a dental crown over the treated tooth to provide strength and protection. The crown is custom-made to match the appearance of your natural teeth.
